Retort
With a flexible structure that withstands high-temperature sterilisation, retort packaging is a light, practical alternative to cans.
What Is Retort Packaging?
Retort packaging is multi-layer flexible packaging that can be sterilised together with the product in an autoclave under high temperature and pressure. Used as an alternative to metal cans and glass jars, it gives products, under suitable process conditions, a long shelf life with no cold chain required.
Its light weight and the very little space it takes up when empty offer significant logistics advantages. While metal cans take up the same volume even when empty, retort packs ship flat and stackable.
Material selection is decisive in producing heat-resistant pouches. The structure must protect against light, moisture and oxygen while being strong enough to withstand sterilisation temperatures and impacts during transport. The layers used and the seal strength are determined by the product’s process conditions.
Advantages of Retort Packaging
Retort packaging offers a modern alternative to traditional canning methods:
- It takes up less space than cans, cutting logistics and storage costs.
- It is easy to open and easy to carry.
- It can be produced with three- or four-layer material structures.
- It can be applied to stand-up, side seal and shaped pouch formats.
- It protects the product against the effects of temperature, moisture and pressure.
- It helps preserve the product’s aroma and taste.
- It provides a long shelf life.
It is widely used for products such as meat, fish, chicken, ready sauces, cooked meals, soups, meze and pet food.
